L’ombre de ton ombre scarf
L’ombre de ton ombre is a simple garter stitch scarf that wraps nicely around the neck and shoulders. The form of the scarf is created with short rows. The size can be varied by changing the gauge, and/or the thickness of the yarn.
Yarn and needles: 2 skeins of Lanitium ex Machina luxury sock yarn or Madeline Tosh merino light (≈ 800 m/200 gr) or other fingering weight yarn
• 3,75 mm circular needles, or whatever gives you the right gauge
Gauge: 23 sts/10 cm, 46 rnds/10 cm in garter stitch
Gauge affects the size and drape of the scarf, but differences in gauge are not critical. Choose a needle size which gives you a pleasing knitted fabric. Do note, however, that a different gauge means different yardage. Drapey, next-to-skin soft yarn works best. Handspun and multicoloured yarns also pair nicely with this pattern. The finished scarf is the shape of a gently sloping letter C, the size measured at the widest point is ≈ 39 x 165 cm.
The grey scarf is knit in Madeline Toshin Merino Light (single ply 100 % merino), the blue one in Lanitium ex Machina luxury sock yarn (merino/cashmere/nylon-blend).
Techniques: Wrap and turn (w&t): knit the given amount of stitches, pick up the next stitch without knitting it onto the right and needle. Wrap the yarn behind the picked stitch, and put the stitch back to the left hand needle without knitting it. Turn the work. If you wish, you can lift the wrap and knit it with the stitch next to it on the following round, but this isn’t really necessary, as the wrap won’t show in garter stitch fabric.
If you prefer visual learning, here are plenty of wrap and turn-tutorials on Youtube.
